Production Supervisor

The role of the Production Supervisor is to lead and help to develop the Production  team so that we continue to be known for providing the best cutting and sticking  plants in the industry with a special focus on quality, people & technological development and reaching goals

Van Belle Nursery Youngplants is located in Old Clayburn Village where the scenery is beyond beautiful. At this location we propagate 400+ varieties of plants, many of which are highlighted in our show garden. Van Belle Nursery practices open book management, sharing the financials and giving employees a stake in the outcome through a profit sharing program. Goals for this role:

  1. Support Production Manager in the implementation of a successful production plan.
  2. Execute and support production goals 
  3. Back up Production Manager in maintaining Production responsibilities.

Responsibilities for this role:

  1. Plants
    • Ensure that SOP are are up to date for production techniques; 
    • Executing and supporting production schedule tasks, review and plan outcomes with the Production Manager.
    • Reviewing and following under the guidance of the Production Manager cutting availability and quality  (cutting/sticking) requirements based on production planning.
    • Ensure production and sanitation tasks are completed efficiently and on time
    • Oversee accuracy of inventory of plants and production supplies 
    • Improve the process of taking cuttings and doing sticking without exceeding the budget for direct labor.
    • Daily executing all the other aspects of production.
    • Comply  with CNCP rules and regulations on handling incoming material.
  2. People
    • Being an active backup for the Production team. 
    • Maintaining and updating SOPs related to the Production  Program that can be used by other team members
    • Identify and communicate production roadblocks that affect cutting/sticking supply or labor availability.
    • Training FT and PT workers in all Production tasks & keeping the records.
    • Ensure team members receive complete training to operate machinery such as forklift, bobcat & ellepot machine etc.
    • Ensure equipment, machinery and facilities are operated in good and safe condition and report  equipment failures to the proper channel of communication.
    • Plan and oversee minigames to improve habits and processes related to production,
    • Great Communication skills and problem solving oriented
  3. Finances
    • Maintain an accurate inventory of daily production numbers and supplies, materials and assist in purchase decisions.
    • Establish and monitor the production budget and forecast.
    • Assist the Production Manager with other duties as assigned.

Work Conditions:

  • Be prepared to work additional hours as required; especially during seasonal demands from March through July, spraying duties may need to take place in evenings and weekends
  • Employees provide own rain gear, work gloves and safety footwear (per OHS 8.2)
  • Agree to follow and demonstrate the company core values
  • Work in adverse weather conditions and be physically able to meet demands such as standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, twisting and pulling

Requirements to apply for this role:

  • 1 year of growing experience with ornamental nurseries, arboriculture, landscaping or 1-2 years experience in production leadership roles in a high-speed manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to learn, adapt & contribute in constant quality improvements for the plant production
  • Preferable certificate, diploma, degree in any field of Agriculture / Horticulture or advanced technical background to operate the robots.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with strong verbal and written communication. 
  • Experience leading teams of 5+ , schedule and review activities of workers.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively with excellent attention-to-detail with excellent problem solving.
  • Ability to work well with the technological system integration with plant knowledge & lean flow management
  • Ability to  work well independently and collaboratively as part of a dynamic team
  • Maintain VB Nursery standards of work like speed, quality and collaborative team work
