Production Nursery Worker (F/T, temporary – starting February 2012)

VAN BELLE NURSERY, a propagator of shrubs and perennials, is recruiting temporary staff to start February 2012. Resumes may be dropped off in person, weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm at 34825 Hallert Road, or they may be faxed to 604-853-6282. Wage $9.50/hr.

Retail Merchandiser (seasonal F/T – April through June 2012)

Van Belle Nursery, located in Abbotsford, BC, is a leading propagator of woody ornamental plants for the North American nursery industry, and supplies leading retail merchants in Western Canada with a range of finished, retail-ready, plants.

The company’s continued growth and commitment to continuous improvement have prompted the need to hire seasonal full-time Retail Merchandisers. These team members will support our sales efforts to retailers of finished plants in regions including the Calgary to Edmonton corridor, and major centres in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Job Requirements:

Reporting to the Sales Manager, you will be responsible to:

  • Represent Van Belle professionally when engaging our customers
  • Visit assigned retail customers, meeting a set schedule
  • Travel between stores using your own vehicle
  • Face and maintain product to ensure greatest chance for sell through
  • Report on product and store status daily
Education & Qualifications:
  • Must be customer-focused and service oriented;
  • General product knowledge an asset;
  • Must have strong communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle;
  • Must be available on a seasonal full-time basis from the end of April to the end of June

Agronomist Grower (F/T, 2 positions)

As an Agronomist Grower, you ensure that the nursery’s production program meets or exceeds Van Belle Nursery’s customer driven product standards, while leading your team in a way that fosters their professional development.

Job Requirements:

Reporting to an Operations Manager, you will be responsible to:

  • Manage all production activities, including overseeing and coordinating the daily activities of the production team assigned to you;
  • Manage crop health and understanding all aspects related to it; media fertility, EC, pH, physical properties of soil media, etc.;
  •  Scout for pests and disease pressures; have a thorough understanding of pesticides, herbicides, Integrated Pest Management, etc.;
  • Manage irrigation of crops and understand flow rates, optimal irrigation practices;
  • Manage the information on a daily basis using our proprietary software as well as our greenhouse control software; and
  • Have the ability to identify problems and provide solutions on crops assigned (plant health, nutrition, quality) on a proactive basis.
Education and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or greater in Horticulture, Agronomy, floriculture  or a similar field
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the horticulture, ornamental nursery or floriculture industry
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Must be team and goal oriented and be able to work in a fast paced, multilingual and multicultural environment
  • Must have strong communication skills; strong organizational skills accompanied by attention to detail
  • Must have a certified pesticide applicator’s license within one year of hire date
